WASPs

[edit]

What about the Women's Air Service Pilots? They were involved in noncombat flying, mostly the aerial delivery of planes, and pilot duties related to military training (towing targets, etc).

If you know something about this subject (or can look up the information), you should start a new stub. I'm sure this subject deserves an article. ike9898 16:36, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)
This article is about WAAF's not WASP's, entirely different subject--Pandaplodder (talk) 14:28, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WAAFs in Reading

[edit]

A relative of mine was with the WAAFs in Reading, Berkshire, and I'm trying to work out where they were. I think it was near the Bath Road. Does anyone know where I could find a list of sites the WAAF were based? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.81.190.141 (talk) 20:13, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WAAF's serving with SOE

[edit]

New section started, WAAF's were normally seconded to the SOE via the FANY but still remained members of the WAAF. --Pandaplodder (talk) 20:15, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SOE personnel liable to be dropped into enemy-occupied Europe had to be enlisted in one of the British military organisations to allow them official recognition and protection under the Geneva Convention should they be captured, although this was usually ignored by the Gestapo and SS captors and interrogators, who sent most of their captured SOE operatives to the death camps. If captured by the Luftwaffe or Wehrmacht they were usually treated properly and decently, at least until they were handed over to the Gestapo or SS.

Pictures

[edit]

The pictures in this article need to be moved around to produce a much more balanced article. Some could even be removed. If this is not suitable then perhaps a photograph section would be appropriate. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 23:26, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yeah, I agree... Last time I saw this article it was neat... Now it looks like a bad infomercial! --< Nicht Nein! (talk) 05:01, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What planet are you on Nicht Nein? Before this was edited it was very plain, just nothing but text, the pictures have been placed in the gallery where possible.--Pandaplodder (talk) 21:48, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have just looked at the article about the US version of WAAF's (Women in the Air Force (WAF)the pictures there of which there is one more than here, are all over the place--Pandaplodder (talk) 21:53, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Casualties

[edit]

Just spotted that there are 731 WAAFs listed as casualties on the Commonwealth War Graves website. If you plot the deaths by date, I presume that you are simply showing the increasing size of this service - the more people, the more deaths. There does not seem to be an expected peak in the Battle of Britain - November 1943 is the worst month for deaths - with no obvious explanation. Very difficult to discover the cause of death in each case - it would be helpful to categorise by enemy action on/off duty, accidents on/off duty - also split into road accidents and flying accidents - but the CWGC site just does not carry that information. (I appreciate WAAFs were not aircrew, but I understand they were often passengers, or even human ballast on training flights.)

For all the Further Reading and "See also" links listed, this seems to be a very short article. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 00:11, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
