Assess

[edit]

Well done. You have an article in the top 250 schools on wikipedia. However The infobox is not done using a standard box and you references do not use the ref tag However if someone corrects this then the article could go into the top 100 or so and be a "good article". Need help? then ask at the schools project or Victuallers 13:53, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inofobox now seems OK. I've started to sort out the references using the proper tag. Hope you can finish off the job and provide proper descriptions.

The football team list has been removed a number of times as it is not in my opinion in the spirit of wikipedia. Please add your comments. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.137.137.59 (talkcontribs)

I agree that it is unecessary and that it just clogs up the page. If there is a list on the school site, there could simply be a link to that page. CWH Lareneg 20:46, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Head boy's privileges

[edit]

The stuff about keeping a goat was rumoured when I was at Bishops, the one about a sword is new to me. I'm inclined to think they're both made up. Can anyone confirm otherwise? Arthur Holland 17:51, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well Head-Boy last year genuinely brought a goat into school and it grazed on the headmasters lawn, so that one at least is true. (Only for the last day) 86.171.46.122 (talk) 22:07, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm inclined to remove the stuff about Head Boy's privileges. I see no evidence that these are anything more than rumours. While I don't dispute the statement made above about the goat, it seems more likely that this was a case of the staff seeing the funny side and allowing this as a final-day-of-the-year gag. Are any of these "priveliges" formally declared in some kind of document: School rules, constitution, something of that sort? Otherwise I think they have to be removed as nothing more than rumour/speculation. Arthur Holland (talk) 11:13, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'm removing the "rumoured" privileges. Arthur Holland (talk) 12:26, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Way too much info

[edit]

There is way too much info on the school here.

We don't need names of House captains, descriptions of uniform, lists of the duties of senior prefects. We don't need a description of the school council, or anything about the bitterness students feel about the rugby team. We don't need much about sport at all, except that the school has done well in some sports.

All of that sort of thing should be on the school's website, for which a link is provided at the bottom of the page. This article could stand to lose about 60% of its content. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.173.6.67 (talkcontribs)

---I trimmed the article considerably, but it's still too long IMHO. When you look at the other links in the group Wiltshire Schools, this is still by far the longest even after the changes. Schools that are much older and longer established are content to put down a brief history and a list of famous alumni. Wikipedia isn't here to provide free advertising to whoever wants it. There is still a LOT of information here which should be on the school's website, not here.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.173.6.66 (talkcontribs)

Does it need who won the house cup? - somewhat irrelivent in my mind. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.4.189.179 (talkcontribs)

I agree, and have removed it. MHDIV ɪŋglɪʃnɜː(r)d(Suggestion?|wanna chat?) 22:18, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is probably the sort of thing that is meant

[edit]

'Recently the addition of a new Sports Hall complex, including a well equipped gym and aerobics studio has provided even more opportunity for boys to excel.'

That's probably the sort of thing the above poster means. This is blatent advertising for the school. NPOV? Hardly. If it were in quotation marks as a quote from the faculty, it would be pretentious, but acceptable. As it is, this is not at all in the spirit of Wikipedia.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.173.6.66 (talkcontribs)

N.B. that is a quote by a member of Staff; some of the Staff at Bishops can be pretentious! Nothing wrong with that! PLease will you all sign your additions! I will try tio restructure the page to cut it down, when I come of my forced wikiholiday! Englishnerd 17:35, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Bishop Wordsworth's School badge.jpg

[edit]

Image:Bishop Wordsworth's School badge.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 00:37, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Senior Prefects/Houses

[edit]

This information is not notable, and is in violation of WP:NOT and should be deleted.144.173.6.67 07:56, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's not. The info is relevant to the subject. Why do you think that it is in breach of WP:NOT? MHDIV ɪŋglɪʃnɜː(r)d(Suggestion?|wanna chat?) 20:29, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't in any way notable. From WP:NOT "Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of items of information. That something is 100% true does not automatically mean it is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia". This is the longest Wiltshire School article, longer than articles for schools which have much longer and more distinguished histories. This is largely because it is full of information which has no notability, and should be on the school's webpage. If I delete this and it is reverted again, EnglishNerd will be in violation of 3RR. I'm going to be sporting and wait for the day to finish, so that the two reversions he has made are archived. However, this page is far too long, and needs to lose, I would imagine, 40% of it's content.144.173.6.67 23:10, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, I won't. It's only within 24 hrs. It is proper etiquette to wait till the dispute is settled to make controversial changes. The houses are deffo relevant to a school article. The senior prefect system is unique in its practises to this school. It is relevant. The idea in [[WP:NOT)) is that you shouldn't include somethign that is true, but is generally taken as a given, i.e. is always the same across the board. There are articles for schools which are a lot longer than this. MHDIV ɪŋglɪʃnɜː(r)d(Suggestion?|wanna chat?) 10:41, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV

[edit]

The majority of this article reads like it was written mainly by members of the school's staff. Muzer (talk) 12:25, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is more likely that it has been written and modified by students of the school —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.111.220.6 (talk) 01:02, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not seeing any particular POV in this article. Can examples be provided? I'll leave this for a bit and will then remove the neutrality banner if no-one responds. Arthur Holland (talk) 12:57, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

?Martival

[edit]

So when did the house name alter. I remember it as Mortival (not Martival), have we had a rewriting of history that I missed. Richard Avery (talk) 13:34, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The house name didn't alter - you just remember it wrong, Richard Overy!! That's the bishop's name - look it up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.205.75.242 (talk) 14:05, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, trés amusante! (from behind your anonymity) But my memory is not faulty and I have printed documents to prove my point. Richard Avery (talk) 10:59, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proof reading of Lord of the flies by students

[edit]

I added in a line concening the proofreading of the original manuscript of Lord of the flies by the the students who he taught at the time. I was told that this occurred by an old student of his who I met when i attended the school. I believe that it is relevant as it ties him and the book into the school in much the same way as the claim that he based some of the characters in it on his students. Jameshrh (talk) 15:48, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid anecdotal claims aren't acceptable sources in wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Reliable Sources for more details. Arthur Holland (talk) 20:36, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Under that same logic shouldn't the claim that the characters in the book are based on students be removed? Or are there sources that could back this up? Jameshrh (talk)jameshrh —Preceding undated comment added 21:52, 12 May 2011 (UTC).[reply]
You're absolutely right, of course. I've added a couple of references relating to Otto Plaschkes, but hopefully there are some more general references to be found as well. Arthur Holland (talk) 08:51, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, well I will look out for some more sources too. Jameshrh (talk) 10:23, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
